Signs Your May Have Cataracts

How Do I Know If I Have Cataracts?

Anyone can suffer from cataracts, however they do generally occur for the older generation and sometimes those with pre-existing medical conditions that can affect the eyes. A cataract is essentially the clouding of the eye lens, which can lead to vision problems occurring over time. One of the most important things to remember is that cataracts develop over time, meaning you won’t just lose your eyesight overnight.

The damage that cataracts cause can’t be treated but the eye lens can be replaced. Cataract surgery replaces the eye lens, meaning your vision will be fully restored to the condition it was before cataracts developed. However, it is important to be aware of the signs of cataracts to ensure you see an eye surgeon before it is too late.

What Are The Signs of Cataracts?

When it comes to cataracts there are a number of signs you need to be aware of to ensure you can seek treatment before your vision becomes too impaired or you suffer from total blindness; which can occur. Some of the main signs of cataracts are:

  1. Light Sensitivity - Glare and light sensitivity or seeing halos is typically a very early sign of cataracts. Clear lenses allow for light to pass through easily, however when these become clouded light and glare causes sensitivity.
  2. Blurry Vision - One of the first signs of cataracts is blurry vision, whilst many people will suffer from blurry vision, this will likely be a blur that doesn’t go away or gradually become worse over time. Blurred vision might only occur in part of the eye and not as a whole.
  3. Night Vision - Seeing at night isn’t the easiest thing to do, but most eyes start to adjust to a nighttime environment, however if you find your vision dimming then you might struggle to see at night and require lighting to see.
  4. Yellowish Eyes - The longer you leave cataracts the more your eye will change over time, and this can be seen through the white of your eye becoming more yellowish or brownish in colour.
  5. Fading and Haze - As your lenses start to cloud, you may start to suffer from fading and haziness and this will typically be more noticeable when viewing colours.
  6. Prescriptions - If you’re finding your glasses or contact lenses need changing regularly and your prescriptions are regularly being changed to accommodate, then this could be a sign you are developing cataracts.
  7. Double Vision - Double vision is when you start to see two of a certain thing or when objects look displaced in your vision. If you begin to experience this on a regular basis then it could be a sign of cataracts developing.
  8. Reading Difficulty - As with any type of vision problem, reading will become more difficult as cataracts develop.
